Large photos can be difficult to upload to application forms, email or websites. The best result comes from changing the right combination of dimensions, format and compression instead of simply dragging quality to the lowest setting.
Start with the image dimensions
A modern phone may create a photo more than 4000 pixels wide. If the image will only be viewed on a web page or submitted to a form, that resolution may be unnecessary. Resize a copy to the dimensions the destination actually needs, then compress the copy.
Choose the right format
JPG is usually efficient for photographs. PNG is better for graphics that need transparency or sharp flat-color edges, but photographic PNG files can be much larger. WebP can be very efficient on the web when the receiving service accepts it.
Reduce quality gradually
For photographs, try a quality setting around 80–88% first and inspect the result at normal viewing size. If it still exceeds the file-size limit, reduce dimensions slightly before using extreme compression.
