How to Compress an Image to 200 KB

Reduce a photo close to a 200 KB upload limit with a repeatable method.

A 200 KB limit is common on online forms. Instead of repeatedly guessing with different apps, use a target-size compressor that adjusts JPEG quality while preserving as much detail as possible.

Use a target rather than a fixed quality

Two photos saved at the same quality can have very different file sizes. Detailed scenes usually need more data than simple backgrounds, which is why a target-size process is more reliable.

Recommended workflow

  1. Open the TheTecTricks Exact KB Compressor.
  2. Select the image and enter 200 KB.
  3. Process the image and inspect the resulting size.
  4. If the image still looks too soft, resize the original to a sensible resolution and try again.

Why a result may be slightly above or below 200 KB

Browser image encoders work with discrete quality levels and image content varies, so the closest visually acceptable result may not be exactly 200,000 bytes. A small margin below the upload limit is normally safer.
